HOW TO GET STARTED &

WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOU START THERAPY:

  • STEP 1:

COMPLETE A FREE, 15-MINUTE PHONE CONSULTATION

Once you reach out, we’ll schedule a phone call to speak more about what prompted you to seek therapy and what you hope to achieve in our work together. I can share more about my clinical philosophy, and we can use this time to determine if we are a good fit.

I encourage you to consider what you’re looking for in a therapist. It’s okay —and totally normal— to speak with a few therapists before finding a good fit. Therapy is a deeply personal process, and your comfort is essential for progress.

If we decide to proceed, we’ll schedule an intake appointment. Prior to your appointment, I’ll send you some paperwork to complete virtually through the HIPAA-Compliant Patient Portal.

  • STEP 2:

    BEGIN THE INTAKE PROCESS

During our first few sessions, we’ll explore in more detail what brought you to therapy. I’ll ask you a lot of questions, and I’ll ensure you have enough time to share any relevant concerns upfront.

It may feel awkward at first—which is normal, as therapy involves being emotionally vulnerable — but my hope is that as we work together, you’ll feel increasingly comfortable in our sessions.

You’re welcome to share as much or as little as you’d like about any discomfort you experience, and I can adjust my approach as needed to support you.

  • STEP 3:

    ENGAGE IN COLLABORATIVE GOAL-SETTING

In our subsequent sessions, we’ll create a plan of what you want to achieve during our time together.

We’ll discuss any barriers you may face in reaching your goals, as well as relevant strategies to overcome them.

For some people, therapy sessions, especially at the beginning of treatment, can feel emotionally draining. This is a normal response— and something I can support you in planning for (for instance, creating a self-care plan to utilize for after sessions).

  • STEP 4:

PARTICIPATE IN ONGOING SESSIONS & GOAL ADJUSTMENTS

For some, it can take a while to see the benefits of therapy. This is because the majority of “the work” happens between sessions by applying what you’e learned in therapy to your everyday life.

Over time, you’ll likely find that your goals shift as you grow and gain new insights.

While you probably won’t experience major breakthroughs every session, you’ll likely find that meaningful, sustainable progress often happens in smaller, cumulative steps over time.

  • STEP 5:

    CONTINUE TO APPLY WHAT WORKS

In our continued sessions, we will continue maintaining what’s working for you. Maybe we’ll meet less frequently (or maybe not).

If new problems arise, we will hold space for those problems, and we’ll make any adjustments to your treatment plan (which highlights your goals) as necessary.

You’ll remain the expert of your own experiences — and you can always give me feedback if something isn’t working for you.
